New linear stepper drive incorporates end stop detection and control electronics

The Johnson Electric Saia Motor brand has developed a stepper motor drive with electronic end stop detection where the motor and control electronics form one structural unit. The integrated solution provides enormous advantages compared with conventional solutions in which a motor and a separate board with the control electronics are connected by a cable. The entire product functionality is contained in one single package instead of traditionally two separate parts.

This solution also requires less space and offers high drive reliability.

At the heart of the stepper drive product range are the proven UCB, UCL and UCB series unipolar rotary and linear stepper motors. The control electronics are mounted directly on the motor coil connecting pins. The drive has a three wire interface for 24V supply voltage, ground and a control input. Optionally the drive can be used as an open-close actuator with a switching contact as a control signal or as a continuously operating adjustment drive. In this case, the position set point can be in the form of a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal or a control voltage between 0-10 Volts.

An integrated algorithm detects mechanical end stops and automatically stops the stepping action. The automatic end stop detection eliminates noise which otherwise occurs on reaching the end position, reduces mechanical stress in the system, compensates for traverse distance tolerances and also increases operating life. The drive produces positioning forces of up to 50 N. positioning speeds of between 2 and 20 mm/sec and positioning distances up to 50 mm can be achieved. The range of applications for the drive include medical devices, office machines, HVAC controls, vending, gaming machines and more.

The linear step motors described on this page have been designed to solve unique applications where a linear step motor may provide improved positional accuracy, smooth operation, and minimal package size.
